S2G BioChem’s management team comprises the following executives:
Mark Kirby – President and CEO
As CEO of S2G BioChem, Mark has led the company from its evolution as an innovative clean tech startup through a period of intense revenue generation and large investment both in capital and strategic partnerships to its current competitive position that is poised for growth and commercialization.
Prior to S2G, Mark managed the spinoff of Ballard Power System’s automotive fuel cell business in 2007, gaining the company $100M, before assuming responsibility for the Cogeneration Market Segment. Before joining Ballard, Mark acquired extensive experience in the clean tech industry as VP, Business Development for the technology startup, QuestAir Technologies, where he developed and commercialized numerous products and applications, most notably PSA systems. Mark developed a deep technology, business development & operations background during his time with Praxair, a major multinational industrial gases company. Here he held numerous roles both in the US and in Canada, including Director, Operations and Logistics for several key business units.
Terry Brix – Chief Technology Officer
Terry holds a BS Chemical Engineering (Montana State University1967); MS Chemical Engineering (University of Washington 1974) and an MBA (University of Washington, 1976). He brings extensive experience in start-ups and technology development and commercialization. After working with Battelle Memorial Institute for thirteen years, he started the first of his 18 technology based companies in 1980. He co-founded Cyanotech in 1984, one of the first publicly traded microalgae (spirulina) companies and has served as president, director, and chairman of:
- International Polyol Chemicals, Inc, (IPCI) 35 patents, $25M of development monies, $250M in capital with two commercial plants in China for converting glucose sugar to industrial glycols
- Brix-Berg, 300 patents in the field of organic chemical separations. Brix-Berg accounts for about 35% of all the US patents in the field of extractive and azeotropic distillation.
- Iochem, the leading producer of elemental iodine in the US
- Brine Electric, engaged in developing brine as a low level geothermal source and value-added uses for iodine containing brines.
Himanshu Kamboj - CFO
Himanshu is a Chartered Professional Accountant with a diverse background in accounting, assurance and finance. He specializes in providing financial advisory services to publicly listed and private companies. Previously, Himanshu worked with a leading mid-size accounting firm in the public assurance group where he provided accounting and assurance services to small and medium sized, publicly listed and private businesses. He has acted as manager and senior accountant on over forty audits and reviews of small to medium sized mining and chemical companies.
Professor W.M. Bill McKean – Principal Scientist
Bill serves as chief scientist for S2G BioChem, leading process research and development in hydrotreating and separations. Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington School of Environmental and Forest Science, he is an expert in paper and wood chemistry, pulping technologies and biomaterials. His research has focused on conversion of biomass to biofibers, biomass derived chemical products and bioenergy. The author of numerous publications and patents, Bill has worked and consulted for leading corporations such as Battelle, Weyerhaeuser, DuPont and Boeing. He is a co-founder of straw-pulping technology company Phoenix Pulp.
Kent Smith – Director, Projects
Kent, a Professional Mechanical Engineer, provides leadership for S2G in the areas of facilities design, project management and business strategy. He brings over 20 years of experience in technology integration, operations and business management. Prior to joining the company, Kent developed an extensive background in operations and maintenance, design, capital construction management and logistics during his numerous roles in the marine shipping industry. This knowledge and experience are key attributes in S2G’s drive to commercialize its biochemical technology.
Jeff Plato – Director, Corporate and Business Development
Jeff comes to S2G with extensive support, operations, sales and marketing management experience in the electronic, industrial and clean technology industries. Prior to joining the company, he led Sales and Marketing for a $175M division of a Fortune 100 company and is now active in startup ventures bringing new technologies to market. He brings experience and passion for process and project management, as well as mentorship and business development excellence to all project developments. Jeff is an engineer from the University of Alberta and a graduate of the Hewlett Packard Functional Management program.
Claudio Arato – Director, Process Engineering
Claudio is a cleantech process development Professional Engineer, chemist and collaborator with 20 years of experience in the invention, development and commercialization of clean technologies. These include: cellulosic ethanol, water treatment, heavy oil upgrading, chlorinated organics (PCBs) soil remediation, novel process design and scale-up, patent/intellectual property development and patent protection, processing/optimization, HAZOPs throughout North America as well as in Europe and Mexico. He has worked for leading cleantech companies Lignol Innovations, Millar Western and Sonoro. Claudio is a recipient of the prestigious 2010 Lambert President's Award from the Association of Professional Engineers of BC (APEGBC). As well, he is a 2011 Engineers Canada Fellow and has collaborated on many technical and peer-reviewed journal papers.
